Instructions for Wiki Users

This website uses familiar wiki software for distributed and collaborative authoring. The wiki software we use to run this site is called Semantic MediaWiki, which adds semantic capabilities to the Mediawiki software. The following links provide documentation relevant to using this website.

  • Wiki Software--Consult the User's Guide for information on using the wiki software. MediaWiki is the software that powers this wiki website.
  • Semantic Wiki Software--Consult the User Manual for information using the semantic wiki software. Semantic Media Wiki is the software that provides semantic extensions to the MediaWiki software.

Sidebar Menu Items

Navigation Bar

  • Main Page—Contains background information about Concept Hub, navigation starting points and future plans.
  • Categories—Group concepts to make them easier to find.
  • Discussion Forum—Allows the user community to provide general comments. In development.
  • News—Allows users to post relevant news and calendar events to the Concept Hub community. In development.
  • Download Content—Provides a way to download content. In development.
  • Help—Provides instructions on how to use a wiki, how to use Concept Hub, and how to contact Concept Hub.

Toolbox Bar

  • What Links Here—Provides links to concepts that have a semantic relationship with the current page. For example, if a user looks up a drug ingredient and clicks the “What links here” menu item, a list of links is provided which takes the user to clinical drugs containing the ingredient. This feature is effective within concept pages but not within general information pages, which just returns itself.
  • Printable Format—Provides a printable version of the current page.

Contributing to the Wiki

The main objective of Concept Hub is to promote semantic interoperability. Concept Hub provides a central place where users can quickly look up and locate NCID codes for medical concepts. The wiki technology facilitates collaboration among subject matter experts globally, creating an open, public forum for defining concepts and sharing the multiple ways they can be represented, their mapping to standard and local terminologies, and how the concepts relate.

Contributions from the user community are key to the organic growth of Concept Hub and how comprehensive the content will become. Initial concepts are loaded into Concept Hub by 3M Health Information Systems, Inc. (3M HIS). Registered users take an active part in editing the content in Concept Hub. There are several ways users can contribute to Concept Hub:

Additions

Users have the option of adding new concepts that they find missing in the concept databank through an online form. For example, if a user looks up the NCID code for a test unique to their hospital or region, or that has simply not been included, the user can fill out a form adding this test to the concept databank. 3M HIS will later assign a new NCID code to the new test. New concepts which have been added by users will be released to Concept Hub with their accompanying NCID codes. Users can also add new representations, relationships, and mappings to existing concepts.

Deletions/Modifications

Concepts that have been assigned NCID codes are never deleted. Instead, the status of concepts can be set to be inactive or obsolete. Users have the option of deleting and adding information to existing concepts. For example, if there is a mistaken description or typo on a concept, this can be corrected by the user. If the procedures for a test have been changed, users can update the test on Concept Hub in an editable field.

Creating Categories

Users can create new categories and subcategories to group concepts.

Creating Links

Users can can create meaningful named relationships among concepts. Some concept pages are automatically linked to other pages based on the vocabulary used to describe the concept. Users can explore these vocabulary links by clicking “What links here” on the Toolbox bar.

What Can’t be Changed

Certain parts of a concept page are not editable. The NCID code assigned to a concept is permanent and cannot be deleted or changed. The concept's properties section (status, superceding NCID code if any, and attributes) is also not editable. However, users can submit suggestions for change, for e.g., to set the status to obsolete, or to inactivate a redundant (duplicated) concept.

Editing

Development is underway to enable forms for adding new concept pages and editing attributes. Until these are complete, please list problems, suggested edits, deletions and additions on the discussion tab of the page of interest.
